AUTOGRAPHED BY ' JOSEPH SPAH ' :
Joseph Spah
Joseph Spah - Alias "Ben Dova" was the stage name for actor, comedian and acrobat Joseph Spah. Spah was a survivor of the Hindenburg disaster of 1937. He was not only a survivor, but a person of interest in the explosion. During the flight, he was granted access to the interior of the airship, off-limits to passengers so he could feed and walk his dog who was kept in the cargo area. Because of this, he was heavily investigated after the disaster, but eventually exonerated. In every documentary, movie, and literature about the Hindenburg, Joseph Spah is prominently featured.

Dear Mr. Miller:

Your letter of July 3., re the "Hindenburg" got to me in a

in as much as I am not living in Douglaston

anymore. I don't think that i will be able to spend that

much time to rehash a story that has been told again and again, there are several books on the market that have been written about the Hindenburg and all the survivors, I am sure you will be able to find a story there with me having to go into details.

I am sorry to say, that I have no items from the Hindenburg that I could part with and I don't know of anyone who might have some memento of this disaster. I am sorry that I can't be of more help.

Thank you for your interest, to me it is a debacle that I rather put out of my mind.

sincerely yours,

Joseph Spah

Mr. Joseph Spah,

Recently I was talking to Moody Erwin who flew on the

U.S.S. Akron Airship and when it went down in the Atlantic in 1933 he was one of three survivors and today at 69 he is the only living survivor of that crash.

I asked Moody if he was at Lakehurst during the

Hindenburg disaster, he said he was, along with many of his friends who helped with pulling people from the flames.

He called it "a sad sight- such a beautlful airship was gone." asked him did he know of any of the survivors from the Hindenburg who I might get in touch with and he mentioned your name and that you lived in Douglaston, L.I. and he knew somebody who knows Philip Lenz one of the surviving crew members, he is going to let me know his address.

Mr. Spah, were you on board the Hindenburg at the time of the disaster and would it be too much trouble to let me know a little about yourself and if it was the first time

As a great admirer of airship history it would please me very much if I could obtain some item from the Hindenburg you wouldn't mind parting with. I do hope you can assist me in this interest of mine.

Wishing you well,

Sincerely,

Bud Miller
