Fabric from the left wing of the original Wright Flyer that flew at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. Orville Wright piloted the first powered flight of a heavier than air aircraft. The flight lasted just 12-seconds, traveled 120-feet, and reached a top speed of 6.8 miles per hour. Their final flight in this aircraft that day traveled 852-feet and lasted 59-seconds Orville and Wilbur Wright flew the aircraft four times that day, each flight traveling further. When taking a break for lunch an exceptionally strong gust of offshore wind lifted the Flyer up and dropped it back down damaging it. Orville planned on leaving it for the winter storms to take; while the brothers took the knowledge gained from the historic event back to their home in Dayton, Ohio to further develop the design. However, a local sea rescue station worker observed how the aircraft was of historical value. So, the brothers shipped the aircraft back to it's home in Dayton.
