THE ANATOMY OF THE AEROPLANE by STINTON 1st
PUBLISHED ; FOULIS
1st EDITION 1966
THE ANATOMY OF THE AEROPLANE is a physical textbook, for students of aeronautics, that bridges the apparent gulf which many feel exists between their understanding of aeronautical principles and the practical world of the many- purposed aeroplane Written originally as a set of notes for student test pilots, the book discusses the shaping of aeroplanes from the standpoint of meeting opera- tional and design requirements~both of which are functions of human needs and operational environment. To do this, the design of an aeroplane as a general flying-machine is considered in terms of aerodynamic shape, propul- sion-system, features enabling it to oper- ate from land and water, and structural shape. To lend point to the general study, a number of appendices have been added which, in many Ways, form an extra book between the same covers. These deal with specific applications in the form of projects._ Examples are given of light and utility aeroplanes (the latter for use in developing countries), subsonic trans- ports (including aerobuses), supersonic transports, strike and reconnaissance aeroplanes, and aircraft designed for counter-insurgent, or COIN, operations.
