TYPED AUTOGRAPHED MESSAGE TO AN AMERICAN RESEARCHER AND ADMIRER:

Philipp Lenz February 7th, 1975

799 Friedrichshafen

Zeppelinstr. 82

Dear Mr. Miller,

First I thank you for your season's greetings and the bronze medal

that you were so kind so send me along with the "National Geograhic Magazine".

It was really a good idea and a nice Christmas present.

Now let me turn to your questions.

Yes, of course, I knew Captain Lehmann very well, and I spent a lot

of time with him. He was not only a good commander, but he had a

great passion for music. When the electric installations were getti-

ng more and more complicated he wanted me to join the crew.

Enclosed please find 10 photos, one with Captain Lehmann on it.

I hope you will like them.

After I recovered from the burns in the Fitkin Memorial Hospital

in Neptune, New Jersey I returned to Germany together with 5 other

crew members, who were Dr. Eckener, Mr. Dörflein, Mr. Sauter, Mr.

Lau and Mr. Bauer, in the passenger ship (Ocean Liner) "SS Europa", which was at

that time the fastest German ship.

You are right, I was an important person in the investigation, be-

cause I was the chief electrival engineer. I don't know for sure how

long the investigation took, but the result of it was not satisfactory

at all; there were several theories of what could have been the cause

of the disaster. As you know, the most recognised theory is that it

could have been sabotage.

My last stay in America was in the above-mentioned hospital.

I am hoping that you like my small report and that I could have helped

you a little bit, and I am glad to have been able to meet some of your

wishes, because my grand-child does most of the work.

Yours faithfully,
