1932 Dawson County High School Yearbook, Dawsonian, Glendive, Montana located in Dawson County, next to the State of North Dakota in the area known as the Badlands. Makoshika State Park is located next to Glendive and the name comes from the Indian Name, "ma-KO-shihkuh from the Lakota Language, Maco Sicao, meaning Bad Land or Bad Spirits. It now is a nature preserve and public recreation area located on the southeast side of Glendive. The State Park encompasses badlands containing dinosaur fossils and rock from the Hell Creek Formation. The is the largest of Montana's State Parks at more than 11,000 acres. In 1938 the Badlands site was proposed a Badlands National by the Glendive Chamber of Commerce. Chamber secretary K. E. Burleigh wrote to federal officials requesting that they inspect out proposed Badlands State. He said we would appreciated any efforts on your part to have a park established near Glendive, as you know we are very short on scenery and places of interest and I believe it would be one way to have the tourist stop in Glendive for a day or two.Photo # 1 shows the front cover. Photo # 2 shows the bottom of the book where there is much wear on the binding. Photo # 3 shows the Title Page. Photo # 4 shows the Table of Contents. Photos 5 and 6 talk about the new school. The school was made possible through the passage of a special bond in November 1929. March 2, 1931 was the formal opening. Photo # 7 shows the old school building. That school building was erected 1909. Photo # 7 shows the Principal, Clara J. Emerson. Clara Emerson came tp Glendive, Montana in 1925 to become Principal of the school. The yearbook states that Dawson County High School is ranked as one of the best schools between Minneapolis, Minnesota and Seattle, Washington. The high scholastic standard of Dawson is largely a result of the sincere effort of Miss Emerson. Spencer Johnson is the current Principal. Photos 9 and 10 show the Senior Class Officers: Starting at the top: Henry Dion, Hank, Class President, William Andrews, Vice-President, Gladys Swanson and Frances Jensen, Treasurer. Photo # 11 shows the following Seniors: Helen Thorpe, Billy Lowe, Doris Lease, Chester Grow, Elma Gregg and Melvin Kolstad. Photo # 12 shows the following Seniors: Sylvia Whitmer, Arthur Rockne, Helen Hillard, Earl Peterson, Myra Moore and Gerald Lygre. Photos 13 thru 19 show the remaining Senior Class Members. Photo # 20 shows the Group Photo of the Sophomores. Photo # 21 shows the Group Photos of the Freshmen. Photo # 22 shows the first page of the Alumni starting in 1990. There are six pages of Alumni. Glendive is home to several Dinosaur Museums. One of them is the Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum which is a 20,000 square foot facility featuring more than 23 full sized dinosaur and fossil exhibit's. The main exhibit of the museum is composed of an 18 foot tall, 40 foot long Tyrannosaurus rex and a 39 foot long Acrocanthosaurus which only 5 have been found and this one is the only one on public display also they have a 40 foot long Tylosaur Dinosaur.
