“Cruising Speed” features a Convair B-58 “Hustler” as she flies at high altitude over a broken cloud deck while streaming contrail plumes from her General Electric J79 engines.

Fort Worth, Texas aircraft company Convair began developing the B-58 just three years after Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 in 1947!

In 1950, the U. S. Air Force contracted Convair to investigate a bomber with a range of approximately 3,000 miles and strike targets at one-and-a half times the speed of sound. Convair was awarded a Phase 1 development contract, and on November 11, 1956, the Hustler took flight.

Hustler crews broke numerous records, and won five major aeronautical trophies (Bendix, Thompson, Mackay, Bleriot, and Harmon trophies).
