Bf109s of JG-52 sweep through a snow covered valley, returningfrom a mission over the Caucasus Mountains,
the highest range in Europe, November1942.
On23rd July 1942, Hitler issued Directive 45 for Operation Brunswick – the Germanleaders plans to overrun the Caucasus – and carry his occupying forces toStalingrad. However stiff Russian resistance and a bitterly cold winter broughtthe Panzer divisions to a halt and it was all the ground crews could do to keepthe Luftwaffe in the air.
Responsibilityfor all air activity in the Southern sector was given to the formidable JG-52Wing. Under the mercurial leadership of Dieter Hrabak, the unit produced thethree highest scoring Fighter Aces of the war, along with many more whose namesbecame legendary.
