- Superman vs. The Authority
Superman: Legacy is the first live-action motion picture of new DC Studios' head James Gunn's newly-forming cinematic DC Universe, and it's a film Gunn has written and will direct once production begins in early 2024. With the cast of the film mostly in-place, Legacy is on the docket to drop July 11th, 2025, and when it does, the movie will be featuring a brand-new Man of Steel along with many other well-known and not-so-well-known DC heroes, villains and characters that fall somewhere in between.
The "in-between" character, or possibly characters, is where the current "insider rumor mill" and speculation are primarily focused. Thus far, Gunn has mentioned that the last characters to be cast for Superman Legacy would be members of the super-team THE AUTHORITY, which itself would be receiving its own feature film in the new DCU after Legacy. And the most recent casting news from DC has confirmed that actressMaría Gabriela De Faría was cast in the role of Angela Spica a.k.a. THE ENGINEER, a core member of The Authority.
With only one member of The Authority announced, the question is whether other characters from the team will also appear. Earlier rumors suggested that Authority members MIDNIGHTER and APOLLO would feature in Superman Legacy, but no word on either has come since news of De Faria's casting. It's possible, as some suggest, that The Engineer has replaced her teammates in the film; others believe Gunn's initial statement and that he's keeping a few character reveals as surprises for the film's release.
DC Comics' latest line-wide revamp, THE DAWN OF DC, has been something of a soft reboot to refocus the storytelling of many of DC's most central characters and bring them in-line with their soon-to-be cinematic counterparts. Changes to Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman,Batman and Robin and more have all been well-received and well-noticed, and with the Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special, The Authority follows suit.
In this new era of DC and the relationship quietly being established between the publisher's characters and their future portrayal in the new DCU, cover artist Jeff Spoke's INCENTIVE 1:25 VARIANT COVER featuring APOLLO and MIDNIGHTER is as awesome on its own --- it Glows In The Dark -- as it is as a Highly Collectable and Highly Relevant Key for both characters should they appear in Superman: Legacy. The Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special serves as the First Appearance of either character on a Dawn of DC cover, or on the cover of any comic created to vibe with Gunn's upcoming new movie Universe.
