Photo # 5 shows the railway workers in the Selkirk Mountains. The workers were paid $2.00 a day, $2.50 a day with overtime. The Selkirk Mountain Range was named after Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk. Thomas Douglas tried to help poor Scottish Farmers or Crofters who were being displaced by their Landlords. Thomas Douglas tried to find the farmers land in the new British Colonies and he got a mountain range named after him. Photo # 6 shows the Silver City Mining Camp, which is now a Ghost Town. Photo # 7 shows the town of Golden in 1883, originally named Golden City. Golden was a major city for the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway thru Rogers Pass. Photo # 8 shows the Stoney Creek Bridge which is located between Revelstoke and Golden in Glacier National Park. Photos 9, 10 and 11 show The Loop. Construction of the railway through the rugged mountains was a constant struggle. In this area, steep sided valleys and cascading rivers required an intricate series of loop and bridges along rail line. The Loops contained curves equal to several complete circles and allowed the railway to climb into Rogers Pass at a reasonable grade. The Loops are about 5 miles long. Photos 12 and 13 show Rogers Station Railway in the early days. Photo # 14 shows Rogers Pass in more modern times. Shelf # 73.
