ANTIQUE GERMAN 142ND (7TH BADEN)
INFANTRY REGIMENTAL BEER STEIN
Available for purchase is a GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC pre-WWI German regimental beer stein. This one commemorates service in the 142nd (7th Baden) Infantry Regiment of the Imperial German Army. It is very finely detailed with 5 different hand decorated scenes of the unit depicted on the body of the stein. In the center is a portrait of Frederick II, Grand Duke of Baden from 1907 to 1918. The lid has a final with a seated infantryman holding a rifle and raising a stein to his fellow soldiers in the 142nd. The thumblift is a winged griffin, which is the primary figure in the Baden coat of arms. The yellow and maroon stripes near the top and bottom rims are the correct colors for the Baden flag during the time the stein was made.This particular stein belonged to reservist "Uecker", who served in the 4th Company of the 142nd Infantry Regiment in Mulhouse, Germany (now part of France) from 1911-1913. His service record and name are hand painted in the border below the scenes. A complete roster of the unit (including Uecker's name) is hand painted on the body under the handle. The lithophane inside depicts a soldier saying goodbye to his sweetheart (see last photo).The stein has a 1/2 liter capacity and stands approximately 12 1/2" to the top of the lid finial (8 1/4" tall not counting lid). The base is about 4 3/4" in diameter. There are no manufacturer markings underneath, as expected, since these steins were not made for export. I purchased this stein at a recent estate sale. It is guaranteed to be an original pre-WWI stein and NOT a reproduction. Please check out my positive response and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.Since there are so many reproduction regimental steins on and elsewhere online, I will outline several of the features of this stein that demonstrate that it's an antique original. Here are several of these features: 1) inside of lid is shiny and a different color than the naturally aged exterior portion; 2) the scenes are heavily hand decorated (all the colors appear to be hand painted on a transfer background); 3) the owner's name and service record are hand painted on the stein with the correct 2-year service period; 4) the roster is hand painted with last names only; 5) the lithophane is a known original image with good detail; 6) the handle does not have a "bump" molded on the inside; 7) all the features match the unit (infantry soldier on final, Baden winged griffin, Baden flag colors, correct Duke portrait); and 8) there are no manufacturer markings on the underside of the base.Condition of this German regimental stein is EXCELLENT with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The lid is undamaged. The painted scenes are bright without noticeable wear. The inside is very clean. Its only condition issue is that it doesn't sit perfectly flat and rocks slightly (easily fixed with a small piece of felt on the bottom). Overall, this antique stein looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It was obviously well cared for. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.
