1947 POSTAL COVER SPECIAL DELIVERY & AIRMAIL STAMPS & VERY INTERESTING LETTER:
$20.00

We are offering a hand-written letter and postal cover, postmarked Maryville, Tennesse, Dec. 19, 1947. It has a Special Delivery 13 cent stamp with an illustration of a stately brick home, with the postman who has just driven up the road on his motorbike, at the front door handing the mail to the lady of the house. It also has a 5 cent Air Mail stamp. The letter is addressed to Miss Pat Smith in New Haven, Connecticut from "Otto" who likely was her brother. The letter is quite interesting, and although the handwriting is legible, we have copied most of it here, as it is easier to read this way than reading it from our image.
"Here I am way down South among the cotton, cane, and tobacco fields." He says that Amantha, the servant, had cooked his breakfast. "In a little whileUncle Tom will "fetch" the mint Juleps [a cocktail of bourbon and mint], and we will settle down for the afternoon on the veranda. Looking out between the gleaming white pillars, we will see the long sloping lawn, the circular drive edged with magnolias, the arched iron gateway leading to the high road and stretching away into the distant fields flecked with white cotton. Yes Mam, a fine crop this year. In the quarters to the rear of the house I hear faintly the singing of happy "men". Their husky voices are constantly lifted in song - "Way Down South in Old Tennessee". Keeping rhythmic accompaniment are the chirping voices of the pig-tailed "children". Yes Mam, another fine crop this year".
He tells of Mother's new Magnovox [television] "Such an instrument!" Next Otto writes about an upcoming wedding, the groom's nervousness, the preparations, etc., and sort of idle chit-chat. He says they have been buying Christmas presents for the nephews and nieces. "I found one of those long coil springs which climb down the stairs [Slinkys]. They hop from one step to another. Darndest things you ever saw. Ever see one? Freddy will go wild over that. Wish I could be there to see him. I think my scientist brother-in-law will get just as big a thrill! Well, how's about writing and letting me know about yourself! Lots of love, Otto".
