Designer Bio:David Klein (February 23, 1918 – December 9, 2005) was an American artist, best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he produced illustrations for Broadway theatrical productions, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and numerous corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950s and 1960s.
These posters were located everywhere - in airports, railway stations, travel agencies, airline ticket offices, hotels, and on advertising kiosks in cities across the globe. Klein’s award-winning abstract drawings for TWA came to represent the jet age. Klein won many awards for his TWA work. Typical of TWA posters, text content was kept to a minimum and an airplane is shown flying.
Working as a graphic designer in New York City during the Golden Age of American advertising, Klein was in high demand. His style incorporated the abstract elements of the contemporary fine art world, while never losing sight of the importance of clarity of the message he needed to relate. This combination led to a unique style that can only be attributed to Klein, but to many represents the entire Jet Set era of graphic design in America.
Provenance:TWA Travel Agency posters were printed in the 1960s by Silk Screen Products Co., Inc., 18 Hanley Industrial Ct., St. Louis 17, Missouri for D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles (DMB&B) Advertising Agency which managed the TWA advertising relationship. One print proof sample of each poster was delivered to the TWA Account Exective, Karl H. Lemp.
Following his service in WWI, Karl Lemp joined D’arcy (DMB&B) Advertising Agency where he worked for 45-years rising to the position of Vice-President in charge of Print Production. Karl managed several leading D’Arcy clients including Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, TWA and others for many years. He retired in the late 1990s and passed away in 2018. This poster originates from the estate of his son, Karl H. Lemp, Jr.
