RARE PRE WWI GERMAN M1898/02 PIONEER SAWBACK BAYONET 17 INCH BLADE DATED 1905:

RARE ORIGINAL PRE WORLD WAR ONE GERMAN M1898/02 PIONEER SAWBACK BAYONET DATED 1905. The blade measures 17 inches long, it is marked C.G. HAENEL SUHL and the spine a is dated 05. The blade shows areas of dark age patina throughout but the blade is still bright. There is no post factory sharpening or grinding to the edge. The cross guard and pommel show an even dark age patina. There are a few minor paint spots on one side of the pommel.The wooden grips plates are in nice shape showing a few light nicks. The release button is in working order. The leather scabbard is complete with both upper & lower steel mounts. Both mounts show age oxidation, more so to the lower mount. The lower mount shows some minor paint spots & has \"wiggle room\" but is held in place with the factory staple. The leather scabbard body is complete & intact showing wear, age & a few paint spots & drips. There are no tears, breaks or repairs to the leather scabbard body. The upper portion of the leather on the reverse of the scabbard has begun to separate along the center seam but is still factory stitched together - see close up photo. Overall a nice complete example of a rare pattern bayonet. These 98/02 bayonets were only manufactured for a few years before being replaced by the much more common 98/05 bayonet with the shorter 14.5 inch blade.
