By July 2, 1937 she and Fred Noonan had flown more than 22,000 miles. The next leg was an over Pacific flight fromLae to Howland Island. Their total fuel capacity was 1,151 gallons in ten tanks which gave a range of about 4,400 miles. CDkit panel layout is from engine replacement records in Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia).
At center of her instrument was the new Sperry A2 autopilot.
She had lots of new instruments - Kollsman sensitive ALT, a new inclinometer, two Fuel Flow analyzers, a Pioneer drift indicator, and even a g’ meter. Over her left ear, she had a Bendix Aircraft Receiver controller. Other overhead included clock, engine gauges, thermocouples, CHTs, and a Free Air Temp gauge likely added at Jakarta.
Western Electricmodel 13C 50 watt transmitter– modified for crystal control on 500kHz (Marine Band), 3105kHz, and 6210kHz.
The Bendix RA-1B remote control(or similar) controlled the Western Electric 20B receiver. This set up received on bands 188–420kHz, 550–1500kHz, 1500–4000kHz, and 4000–10000kHz; and also added 485–1200kHz 500kHz marine distress band. Earhart reported receiving a 7500kHz signal fromItasca, but she was unable to obtain an RDF bearing.
Somewhere in the mix was the beat frequency oscillator- continuous wave - Morse code and beacons. But neither Earhart nor Noonan were capable of using Morse code.
