Hobby Master Convair F106A Delta Dart 87th FIS "Red Bulls" 1:72 Scale VERY RARE:
$159.95

The Convair F-106A Delta Dart began as an advanced version of the F-102 Delta Dagger. Because of the numerous modifications and design changes, it became a new aircraft with its own designation. The F-106 was designed as a missile carrying all-weather interceptor against Soviet bombers, and served in its role from the 1960's to the 1980's. The F-106A as well as the F-106B (two seat trainer version) served with 15 fighter interceptor squadrons beginning in 1959. The aircraft was commonly referred to as the "6". It has the distinction of being the fastest single engine jet fighter in the world. On 15 December 1959, Major Joseph W. Rogers set a world speed record of 1,525.96 miles per hour, at 40,500 feet. That same year, Charles E. Meyers flew another F-106 to 1,544 miles per hour.
The 87th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS), known by their squadron paint as the "Red Bulls", flew the Convair F-106 Delta Dart under the Air Defense Command (ADC). The squadron was based at the Duluth Air Force Base, Minnesota. In May of 1971, the squadron moved to K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base located in Marquette, Michigan. The squadron's mission was to maintain all-weather readiness in interceptor tactics, aerial refueling, and aerial combat. This aircraft (59-0053) was eventually converted to an QF-106 target drone that was shot down by a Stinger missile on 27 August 1996 (how very, very sad).
