This 18th century medal commemorates the coronation 300years ago of the Image of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados de Manila,Enshrined at the Church of Santa Ana in Manila (Philippines). The originalstatue was made in Valencia in the year 1713 and was touched to the originalimage of the Virgin enshrined in the basilica before going to the Philippinesin the year 1717. This medal dates from that period.

Lucia of Syracuse (283--304), also called Saint Lucia(Latin: Sancta Lucia) better known as Saint Lucy, was a Roman Christian martyrwho died during the Diocletianic Persecution. She is venerated as a saint inthe Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Eastern Orthodox churches. She is one ofeight women (including the Virgin Mary) explicitly commemorated by Catholics inthe Canon of the Mass. Her traditional feast day, known in Europe as SaintLucy's Day, is observed by Western Christians on 13 December. Lucia of Syracusewas honored in the Middle Ages and remained a well-known saint in early modernEngland. She is one of the best-known virgin martyrs, along with Agatha ofSicily, Agnes of Rome, Cecilia of Rome and Catherine of Alexandria.

This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004. In addition, this book has chapters(outlined in the table of contents), describing each of the categories ofmedals, their possible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of themint where they were made. We recommend that anyone serious about collectingmedals from this period acquire a copy of this book.
