RARE VINTAGE GREEK BYZANTINE ICON - "THEOTOKOS" Mother of God950 SILVER SETTING - Highest Quality

EXCELLENT vintage condition - Absolutely beautiful.
Overlay setting is marked "950 Silver" purity.
The hand-applied intricate relief setting adds wonderful depth & dimension to the piece.
The portrait of the Madonna & Child is an authentic painting of Byzantine art - the chasing & repousse' setting are also hand chiseled.
Greek letters "IC XC" seen in the middle left are shorthand for "Jesus Christ" in Greek.
Greek letters "MP" & "OY" short for "MHTHP OEOY" placed at the left & right of the head of the Virgin Mary are transliterated "Meter Theou" or "Mother of God". The "O" is the Greek letter "Theta". When you see two letters and a small squiggle over them, it means that the word has been abbreviated, and you are seeing the first and last letters of the word.
Hanging loop is attached to the back of the black composite board frame - hanging loop lays flat for easel display.
The "A N" at the bottom translatesὬΝ"He who is".
Approx measurements : 4" high x 3" wide x 3/4" depth.

The "Mother of God" is seen gazing directly at the viewer with a somber expressionshowing great love & careas She tenderly embraces the infant Jesus while gently pressing Her cheek to His as He almost playfully reaches to touch Hers.
With an adult-infant face the infant Jesus gazes at His mother as She supports His body & feet.
The vocation for the viewer is that we hold Christ in our hearts as She holds Him in Her arms.
