F/A-18A Hornet A21-26was delivered to the RAAF on March 31, 1988, and became the first aircraft to be assigned to 75 Squadron. The aircraft first flew with 75 Squadron in April and in September 1988 both 75 Squadron and A21-26 arrived at RAAF Tindal.

In 2005 the aircraftA21-26 of RAAFNo. 2 Operational Conversion Unit [OCU]received a special paint scheme to mark the 20th Anniversary of Hornet operations with the RAAF and was firstshown at the Avalon Airshow that year. Over its service time,A21-26 spent time with 3SQN, 75SQN, 77SQN, 2OCU and ARDU.

TheRoyal Australian Airforce(RAAF) has operatedMcDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft since 1984 purchasing 75 \"A\" and \"B\" variants. The Hornets entered service with the RAAF between 1984 and 1990, and 71 remained in operation as of 2017. The other four Hornets were destroyed in flying accidents during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet is a supersonic twin-engine all-weather night fighter and attack aircraft. The F/A-18s first flew in November 1978 and the first 1987 production switched to the F/A-18C. Variants A and C are single-seat aircraft while B and D are tandem-seats. The Hornet can operate from either aircraft carriers or land bases with the capability of in-flight refuelling. A total of 1,480 A-D variants were built.

The RAAF will begin to retire itsF/A-18s in the late 2010s, and the last aircraft will leave service in theearly 2020s. Under current Australian Government planning, they will be replacedby 72Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning IIfighters.

No. 3 Squadron is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) fighter squadron, headquartered at RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle, New South Wales. Established in 1916, it was one of four combat squadrons of the Australian Flying Corps during World War I, and operated on the Western Front in France before being disbanded in 1919. It was re-raised as a permanent squadron of the RAAF in 1925, and during World War II operated in the Mediterranean Theatre. The Cold War years saw the squadron disbanded and re-raised twice. It was based at RAAF Butterworth during the Malayan Emergency and the Indonesia–Malaysia Konfrontasi. Equipped with McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet multi-role fighters from 1986, the squadron deployed to Diego Garcia in 2002 to provide local air defence, and the following year contributed aircraft and crews to the invasion of Iraq as part of Operation Falconer. In April 2016, it deployed to the Middle East as part of the military intervention against ISIL.

No.75 Squadronis aRoyal Australia Air Force(RAAF)fighterunitbased atRAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory. Thesquadronwasformed in 1942 and saw extensive action in theSouth West Pacific theatreof World War II operatingP-40 Kittyhawks. It was disbanded in 1948, butreformed the following year and operated jet aircraft throughout theCold War.The squadron was based in Maltafrom 1952 to 1954, flyingdeHavilland Vampires, andMalaysiafrom 1968 to 1983, withDassaultMirage IIIs, before returning to Australia.

The squadron was re-equipped withF/A-18 Hornetfighters andmoved to RAAF Base Tindal in 1988. It was placed on alert to support theAustralian-ledINTERFETpeacekeeping deployment toEast Timorin1999 and saw combat in 2003 as part of theAustralian contribution to theinvasion of IRAQ.

RAAF No. 77 SQNis aRoyal Australian Air Force(RAAF)squadron headquarteredatRAAF Base Williamtown, New South Wales. It iscontrolled byNo.81 Wing, and equipped withMcDonnell DouglasF/A-18 Hornetmulti-role fighters. The squadron was formed atRAAFStation Pearce, Western Australia, in March 1942 and saw action in theSouthWest Pacific theatre of World War II, operatingCurtis P-40 Kittyhawks.After the war, it was re-equipped withNorth American P-51 Mustangsanddeployed to Japan as part of theBritish Commonwealth Occupation Force.The squadron was about to return to Australia when theKorean Warbrokeout in June 1950, after which it joinedUnited Nationsforcessupporting South Korea. It converted from Mustangs toGloster Meteorjetsbetween April and July 1951 and remained in Korea until October 1954, claimingfiveMiG-15sand over five thousand buildings and vehicles destroyedduring the war for the loss of almost sixty aircraft, mainly to ground fire.

The squadronre-equipped withCAC Sabresat Williamtown in November 1956. Twoyears later it transferred toRAAF Butterworth in Malayato join theair campaign against communist guerrillas in the last stages of theEmergency.It returned to Williamtown in early 1969 to re-equip withDassault MirageIII supersonic jet fighters. No.77 Squadron began converting to Hornetsin June 1987. It supplied a detachment of four aircraft to the American baseonDiego Garciain 2001/02, supporting thewar in Afghanistan. TheRAAF plans to replace its Hornets withLockheed Martin F-35 Lightning IIfighterscommencing in 2018, and No.77 Squadron is scheduled to convert to the newtype in 2021.

About the F/A-18A/B -The F/A-18A (single seat) and F/A-18B (twin seat) Hornets are multi-role fighter aircraft, capable of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. They are an integral part of Australia\'s air combat capability.

In recent years, the Hornets have participated in a range of exercises including Exercise Bersama Lima and Exercise Bersama Shield in Malaysia, Exercise Red Flag in Alaska, and Exercise Pitch Black in the Northern Territory.

The fleet have undergone major electronic upgrades to ensure effective operations. Air Force\'s F/A-18A/B Hornets will be replaced with 72 advanced F-35A Lightning II aircraft from 2018.

The F/A-18A and F/A-18B Hornets can undertake:

  • air interception;
  • air combat;
  • close air support of ground troops; and
  • interception of enemy supply lines including shipping.
  • The Hornet is also capable of air-to-air refuelling from the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport.
