The P-51D Mustang named "Big Beautiful Doll" is an easily recognized plane. Sure, its nickname is painted on the nose, along with a checkered flag. But look under the cockpit, and you'll see what made the plane truly memorable - dozens of Japanese and Nazi flags. Those flags represent destroyed enemy planes. Legendary fighter pilot John D. Landers of Texas flew Big Beautiful Doll as Commander of the 78th Fighter Group based in England.

Lieutenant Colonel Landers flew many airframes during his career. One of the most widely depicted aircraft is a North American P-51D. With the black and white checkerboard markings of the 78th Fighter Group proudly emblazoned on its nose, the all-black rudder of the 84th Fighter Squadron and red highlighting around the squadron codes WZ-I, Big Beautiful Doll was a fine and no doubt a comforting sight to the bomber crews risking their lives over the skies of Europe.
It measures approximately 12 inches front to back and has a total wingspan of 1 4 1/2 inches.Some discoloration on the side decals. This came from a non-smoking home, so I was surprised to see this. Also, some small imperfections in paint-all shown in photos. There is no weakness in the strength of the wings, only a surface cracking to the stress point.
