McDonnell Douglas -17 Globemaster III 436th AW 1/400 Diecast Model Airplane Brand new 1/400 scale diecast airplane model of McDonnell Douglas C-17 Globemaster III Transport Aircraft "436th AW Eagle Wing, Dover AFB" United States Air Force "Gemini Macs" Series die cast model by GeminiJets. Detailed exterior. True-to-scale detail. Does NOT include stand. This model does not have any openings. Manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Made of diecast metal with some plastic parts. Dimensions approximately L-5.25, Wingspan-5.125 inches. Diecast metal and plastic construction for durability and a heavy, realistic feel. HISTORY ASPECTS: Manufactured by GeminiJets as a limited edition, highly collectible model, the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III has been meticulously recreated from Boeing's blueprints and features realistic landing gear and detailed graphics, assuring the utmost accuracy and superior quality. The original lineage of the C-17 dates back to the early 1970's when the United States Air Force needed a single aircraft that would combine the capacity of the C-141 Starlifter and the C-5 Galaxy aircraft, yet have the versatility of the C-130 Hercules. Because of the lessons learned in the Vietnam War, the USAF turned to Boeing and McDonnell-Douglas to come up with a design to fit the requirement. Although both manufacturers came up with completed, flyable prototypes, neither was chosen. With the war's end, both companies went back to the drawing boards to come up with a more modern design, and McDonnell-Douglas came out the winner. In August 1981, the C-17 was given the official "go-ahead" from the USAF. First flying in September 1991, the C-17 is one of the USAF's most important aircraft. Filled with modern day technology, no other military transport aircraft matches it's capacity. Some of these features include a full "glass" cockpit that has a "heads up display" (HUD). Performance is remarkable with the ability to take off and land using only 1,400 feet of runway. With the C-17's in-flight refueling capability, the aircraft has global range, and more than three times the capacity of the C-130, making it the new backbone of the USAF's transport fleet. Despite Boeing's loss to McDonnell-Douglas for the contract to build this new transport, an ironic turn of events happened in the late 1990s that lead to Boeing's purchase of McDonnell-Douglas, thus securing the honorable rights to the C-17. As the popularity and versatility of the C-17 has been recognized, many of the world's air forces have added this aircraft to their fleets. On August 15, 2021, this Dover Air Force Base's Boeing C-17 Globemaster III performed a phenomenal feat. Operating as call sign "Reach 871," the aircraft departed Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport with a record 823 passengers aboard during a humanitarian evacuation bound for the Al Udeid Airbae in Qatar. This heroic flight comprised 640 adults and 183 Afghani children and is the largest airlift of passengers ever to be carried on a single aircraft. This flight would not have been possible if it were not for the valiant efforts of the logistics and skills of the 3rd Airlift Squadron from Dover AFB.
