" Les fêtes de l'aviation des 6, 7 et 8 août 1910, au plateau des Bruyères, ...restèrent longtemps dans la mémoire des Audomarois.Le meeting aérien attira une foule considérable venue en trains spéciaux, en omnibus, en voitures à cheval, à pied et en vélos pour assister au vol des quatre aviateurs célèbres de l'époque et habitués des meetings : Jullerot, Thomas, Ernest Paul et Mollien. Ce sont les vrais débuts de l'aviation et la plupart des spectateurs voient un avion pour la toute première fois.L'Union sportive de Saint-Omer a investi 70 000 F. Un quatrième hangar a été construit spécialement. Le vendredi, les quatre aviateurs sont accueillis dans à l'hôtel de ville avec un concert de la musique du Huitième de ligne. Le samedi, premier jour du meeting, Ernest Paul est cloué au sol avec son biplan Voisin car le vent souffle trop fort. Les trois autres aviateurs s'élancent chacun leur tour avec les acclamations de la foule. Un concours de cerfs-volants scientifiques se déroule avec sept prix : distance, grand poids, photographiques... En marge de la fête, sept formations musicales se relayent pendant pour un festival permanent. Le soir, les monuments de la ville sont illuminés et une retraite aux flambeaux est organisée. Mais le lendemain, un événement va contrarier la suite du meeting. Les grandes fêtes de l'Aviation qui ont attiré près de cent mille spectateurs durant trois jours ...se poursuivent le dimanche 7 août 1910. Plus de cinquante mille spectateurs se pressent à l'aérodrome des Bruyères pour acclamer les aviateurs Mollien, Thomas, Jullerot et Ernest Paul.Malheureusement le vent souffle trop fort et les avions sont cloués au sol toute la matinée et le public assiste résigné au concours de cerf volants.L'après-midi, le vent se calme enfin et les aéroplanes décollent chacun leur tour. Thomas, avec son monoplan Antoinette, va jusqu'à Tatinghem, Wisques, Leulinghem, Lumbres et revient sur le champ d'aviation sous les acclamations du public. Il remporte le record de durée avec vingt-huit minutes de vol.Mollien s'envole à son tour sur son Blériot et à son retour il manque de s'écraser dans le public.Vers 16 heures, a lieu l'ascension aéronautique. Le lundi après-midi, l'aviateur Mollien sur son Blériot décolle et survole Saint-Omer pour la première fois de tous les temps. Les habitants sortent de leurs maisons pour l'acclamer et l'admirer. L'aviateur gagne le prix Letainturier-Guerlain de 500 francs pour le premier survol de Saint-Omer.Au soir de cette troisième journée M.
