After completing his historic Trans-Atlantic Solo flight, he took the Spirit on a grand tour of the Latin American nations from Dec. 13, 1927 through February 13, 1928.He visited countries and islands on the periphery of the Caribbean Sea.
Upon his arrival in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, then called \"Republica Dominacana\" he was greeted by B.L Rowe. Chief Pilot and owner of WIAE - West Indies Air Express.B. L. Rowe was flying local Aair Mail on inter-island routes starting from Santo Domingo, with other stops in Port-auPrince Haiti and Havana Cuba. They became fast friends.
B.L. Rowe asked Lindbergh to carry his bags of mail from:Santo Domingo to Port-auPrince #1Santo Domingo to Havana via Port-au-Prince #2 a through flightPort-au-Prince to Havana, Cuba #3
B.L. Rowe, the entrepeneur, realizing the opportunity. He ceated @1500+ covers addressed to himself. along with the regular mail, for each bag of mail and arranged for approriate country\'s Stamps onto pre-printed envelopes . For Sale to, the then very popular, flown cover collectors.A Special BLUE HandStamp for all the covers indicating \"Lindbergh Flown\" out of Santo Domingo .A Special RED HandStamp(s) with Spirit of St. Louis likenesses for those flown out of Santo Doming to Port au Prince and Havana.Another Special RED (Different HandStamp was used on covers oroginating out of Port-au-Prince for cancelling.Without those special HandStamps and approprite dates, (1928) the covers are not authentic .... Beware.
According to Scott Stamp catalogue - none of the stamps have any rarity, just commons at the time.
The AAMC - Americn Air Mail Catalogue shows these as #s L33, L34 & L35.L33 Santo Domingo - Port-au-Prince 1607 piecesL34 Santo Domingo - Havana 1570 piecesL35 Port-au-Prince - Havana - NOT LISTED as it is believed that many of the pieces were destroyed in a Hurircane that struck Cuba in 1931 !!!Also, an unknown amount of the Santo Domingo-Havana covers likely suffered a similar fate.
How many still exist after 95 years?
I\'ve been watching for identical listings and there are NONE! I saw one set , probably 20+ years ago.In the last few months there was ONE authentic cover listed for the 3rd flight. - I bought it!There was another one, incorrectly listed, it looked very, very similar, but no Red Spirit cache and wrong date, from a major cover store owner. I messaged him with all the facts and photo of an authentic \"Spirit flown by Lindy\" and it was withdrawn. Thus my warning of - beware.
All of these are RARE! Especially #2 & #3.I\'ve monitored for years and picked up just a few of these for my \'Lindbergh Flown\' collection.Time to Share the rarity and special aviation and postal history of --- \"FLOWN ON THE SPIRIT of ST. LOUIS\"!!! --- \'WoW\'
Time to OWN!-evhod-
