Douglas Factory Skeletal Proposal Modelfor the C-5 ProgramIn 1961 the US Military called for a heavy jet transport design competition
to replace the prop-powered Douglas C-133 Cargomaster and that would
also have a larger cargo bay than the jet-powered Lockheed C-141 Starlifter. This large, historic, wood model was the Douglas Aircraft Company\'s
response to the military request. It was built at the Douglas Model Shop
in Santa Monica, California. This is Douglas\'s vision of what the swing nose and cockpit configurationfor their C-5 proposal would look like. Lockheed eventually won the contract. The model measures about 83 inches long, 36 inches high and
28 inches across.
This C-5 proposal model is in its original state but has had light restoration
where broken and cracked parts were fixed, re-attached, and painted with
a matched silver grey paint.
There are 2 control knobs on the right side of the fuselage just behind the
nose hinge line, but they are not functional. One knob was used to unlock the nose latch to allow the nose to swing out. Am not sure what the other knob does, maybe to actually swing open and
close the nose, or to allow the nose ramp to extend out?
Both the nose and the ramp can be extended manually. Both operations
open and close easily. The hinge has been slightly sprung for the nose slightly
droops down and does not shut completely flush at the top of the fuselage. The model sits on two upright studs on a long black board. There is a
Douglas decal logo at the front of the board.
This is a heavy model - I\'m guessing 60 to 80 pounds but it will be moreif it is crated for shipping. would not give a price for shipping for it is too big and too heavy. So I had to list it as Local Pick Up.But If you require shipping I will arrange for
crating and shipping. Buyer pays for both, including insurance.
