Circa 1900 North German Lloyd Steerage Souvenir Fork w/ 4-Stack Ship Portrait: $35.00
North German Lloyd: A pressed metal fork with an art nouveau design including a four-stack ship portrait from North German Lloyd. On one side of the 7.75" long fork is the line name in German and home port of Bremen along with the key-and-anchor logo. On the other side is a four-stack express liner of the late 19th or early 20th centuries. I believe this fork was used in Steerage. Both North German Lloyd and Hamburg American sold emigrants supply kits for their voyage that included eating utensils. No shipping company in history would dare place something this attractive in front of a passenger without making them pay for it first! I think the fork was part of the supply kit and kept by many newcomers to America as a cherished souvenir of a bold and frightening journey. Good condition with wear and tarnishing.
