A Gigantic, Water-CooledTwo-Stroke Makes Its DebutAt The Japanese Motor ShowONE OF THE EYEPOPPINGEST ma-chines to be seen in a long timewas unveiled by Suzuki at the17th Tokyo International Motor Show.Behold the wondrous 750. poweredby a transverse, three-cylinder, two-cycle engine, in unit with a five-speedtransmission. No horsepower figureswere given, but if you study the Titan500 which has 46 horsepower, divide byhalf, and add that onto 46, that gives 69plus with maybe five or six morethrown in for the water-cooling andelectronic ignition. Seventy-five horsessounds about right. You can bet itwon’t be much less, for Suzuki knowsthey will have to build a screamer toflee from the swiftest. Honda Four andMach Hl.The vitals: three carburetors fittedwith short rubber tubes onto the engine, feeding mixture through a piston-portinduction system. Lubrication by Suzu-ki CCI. A capacitor discharge electronicignition system, similar to the ignitionon Suzuki racing cars. And kick starting, which shows that Suzuki has a lot offaith in their cdi to fire up before yourleg wears out.The most unique feature of theengine is the water-cooling; this is theonly water-cooled motorcycle to appearsince the famous Scott two-strokes ofthe late 1930s. A polished aluminumwater jacket surrounds the three cylin-ders, and is cast with rows of stubbyvertical fins for what could strictly becalled an air/water cooling system.Short intake and exhaust stubs are alsocast on the cylinders. Coolant is circu-lated through a small radiator set infront of the engine. An electric fan isenclosed in a small shrouding behind thecentral part of the radiator; presumablyit is switched on automatically at acertain critical engine temperature (aswhen idling too long or moving in slowstop-go traffic). The engine exhausts through threepipes; the right and left pipes fit intohuge mufflers that end with black re-verse taper cones. The center pipe issiamesed at a point under the engineand feeds into two smaller mufflers.Their total volume is supposedly equalto that of one of the big ones. Thereason for the split exhaust system forthe center cylinder is said to be thesymmetrical styling it allows on themachine. Indeed, the swept-up angle ofthe pipes does seem to resemble theHonda CB75O. generally regarded as astyling standard in Japan. The exquisite engine is carried in atwin-cradle frame of broad beam andsturdy gusseting.
