"1981 STS-1 Flight Data File Crew Activity Plan." The Plan is the original US government publication (JSC-12799) published and printed by the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. It is in overall excellent collectable condition and has been stored away from sunlight. The only mark on this rare NASA memorabilia is the last name "Dean," hand-written by the veteran CBS News correspondent who was provided it directly from NASA at the time of publication and as such this small hand-written name on the cover may add value to the piece.
Piloted by astronauts John Young and Robert "Bob" Crippen, the April 1981 launch of the Columbia (STS-1) marked the return of US manned space flight. Tragically, in 2003, the STS-107 Columbia mission ended in tragedy when it disintegrated during reentry, killing all seven astronauts aboard.

Space ShuttleColumbia(OV-102) was aSpace Shuttle orbitermanufactured byRockwell Internationaland operated byNASA. Named after thefirst American shipto circumnavigate the upper North American Pacific coast and thefemale personificationof the United States,Columbiawas the first of five Space Shuttle orbiters to fly in space, debuting theSpace Shuttle launch vehicleonits maiden flightin April 1981. As only the second full-scale orbiter to be manufactured after theApproach and Landing TestvehicleEnterprise,Columbiaretained unique features indicative of its experimental design compared to later orbiters, such as test instrumentation and distinctive blackchines. In addition to a heavier fuselage and the retention of an internalairlockthroughout its lifetime, these madeColumbiathe heaviest of the five spacefaring orbiters; around 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) heavier thanChallengerand 3,600 kilograms (7,900 pounds) heavier thanEndeavour.Columbiaalso carriedejection seatsbased on those from theSR-71during its first six flights until 1983, and from 1986 onwards carried an external imaging pod on itsvertical stabilizer'sResearch Double Module. TheExtended Duration Orbiter palletwas used by the orbiter in thirteen of the pallet's fourteen flights, which aided lengthy stays in orbit for scientific and technological research missions.Columbiawas also used to retrieve theLong Duration Exposure Facilityand deploy theChandraobservatory, and also carried into space thefirst female commanderof an American spaceflight mission, thefirst ESA astronaut, thefirst female astronaut of Indian origin, and thefirst Israeli astronaut.

At the end of its final flight in February 2003Columbiadisintegrated upon reentry, killing the seven-member crew ofSTS-107and destroying most of the scientific payloads aboard. TheColumbiaAccident Investigation Boardconvened shortly afterwards concluded that damage sustained to the orbiter's left wing during the launch of STS-107 fatally compromised the vehicle'sthermal protection system. The loss ofColumbiaand its crew led to a refocusing of NASA's human exploration programs and led to the establishment of theConstellation programin 2005 and the eventualretirement of the Space Shuttle programin 2011. Numerous memorials and dedications were made to honor the crew following the disaster; theColumbia Memorial Space Centerwas opened as a national memorial for the accident, and theColumbia HillsinMars'Gusev crater, which theSpiritroverexplored, were named after the crew. The majority ofColumbia's recovered remains are stored at theKennedy Space Center'sVehicle Assembly Building, though some pieces are on public display at the nearbyVisitor Complex.
