The PENNY MAGAZINE
July 31 - Aug. 31, 1838London & Birmingham railroadThis is a paper which is over 180 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7.5” by 11” in size, and is 8 pages long. The paper came from a bound volume and has typical minor disbinding marks, and is lightly toned from age, but is otherwise in excellent, attractive condition, and printed on a high-quality paper stock. This is a monthly supplementary issue to the regular weekly publication. These special issues often dealt with a single topic, and this issue is entirely devoted to the first part of a series on RAILWAY TRIPS — LONDON AND BIRMINGHAM. It is illustrated with two nice half-page wood engravings:“Entrance to the Euston-Square Station, London.”“Southern Entrance to the Primrose-Hill Tunnel.”The text describes the portion of the rail line beginning from London, up to its passage through Rugby; with details on its route, and the spots through which it goes by, such as: “From the viaduct to the borders of Northamptonshire we come through a fine open country, the view being terminated on either side by ranges of sloping hills. . . .“Indeed from Blisworth to beyond Weedon is the most picturesque portion of the whole line of the Railway. . . . Weedon Beck . . . is a village of considerable size, at which there is an extensive government military depot. . . on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by London’s “Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.” Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and most issues were illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings.411 [gsp9286] _gsrx_vers_856 (GS 7.0.20 (856))
