FS2004 Mil Mi-2

Author – Vladimir Zhyhulskiy

General-purpose light helicopter, paint in Agro company “Niva” (Ukraine), textures with reflecting, full animation, VC.GMax-model.

HISTORY

The Mi-2, NATO code named ‘Hoplite’, was developed in the early 1960’s by the Mil bureau as a turbine-powered version of the Mi-1 Hare. The recent development of the shaft-turbine engine revolutionized the design of the helicopter. The twin turbines develop 40% more power than the Mi-1’s piston engine for barely half the dry weight, more than doubling the payload.
The fuselage of the Mi-2 greatly differs from that of the Mi-1, carrying the engines above the cabin but the overall dimensions of the two models remain closely similar.
The Mi-2 was flown in 1962, but never put into production in the Soviet Union. Instead responsibility for the type was assigned to WSK-Swidnik (now PZL) to Poland as part of a eastern Europe Comecon rationalization program, becoming the only Soviet-designed helicopter to be built solely outside the Soviet Union.
Production in Poland started in 1965 and in the 90s, PZL factory introduces a new variant: W-3.

ABOUT THE MIL DESIGN BUREAU

The Mil Design Bureau was organized under Mikhail L. Mil in 1947. Its first helicopter, the Mi-1 first flew in 1948. Since then, Mil has developed a full range of helicopters, from light utility to heavy transport. Perhaps the most well known Mil helicopter outside of Russia is the Mi-24 combat assault helicopter (NATO code name “Hind”).
The difficulties of manufacturing a new type of aircraft (the helicopter) lead to Mikhail Mil being appointed plant manager at the plant responsible for producing Mil designs in the early 1950s. By the 1960s, Mil produced over 95% of the helicopters in the Soviet Union.

In 1993 the Mil Design Bureau and Moscow Helicopter Plant were transformed to an open joint-stock company–the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant.

Note: Following the Soviet method of designating aircraft, Mil was a design bureau and not a manufacturer of aircraft. The Russian aircraft industry is in the process of adapting itself to the new economy by integrating design bureaus and production facilities.

COMMENT

It’s very nice to see some unique helicopters come out every now and then, the very reason I chose to review this one. The Mil Mi-2 is a little challenging to fly and has basically the same flight characteristics of the default Bell 206B. ( Not to mention the default sounds and instrument panel. ) A very eye appealing model with an opening door and superb textures, the Mil Mi-2 would make a nice addition to any chopper collection. I must confess that the lack of an original instrument panel, it’s own sound package, and a very dull virtual cockpit, detracted immensely from the overall score. The author did a wonderful job with the model itself, but could improve the file greatly by adding the aforementioned goodies. Despite these shortcomings, I will keep this model in my chopper collection in the hope of a future update.
