This book examines the history of the Western Maryland\'s Shay No. 6 from coal hauler to Cass Scenic Railroad.Included are a look at the Western Maryland\'s Chaffee Branch, the construction of the locomotive, the transfer of Shay No. 6 from the B&O Museum to Cass and the restoration of the locomotive. Well illustratedhistory of the events that lead up to the manufacture of the last steam powered Shay gear driven locomotive and its subsequent use. Built in 1945 by the Lima Locomotive Works and assigned to the mountainous Chaffee Branch of the Western Maryland Railway at Vindex, Maryland. Retired in 1953 it was displayed at the at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum at Baltimore, MD until August 1980. It was removed and loaned to the Cass Scenic Railroad for use at Cass, WV. it continues in service there today.
