Film Summary
“The Savannahlander – The Home Movie” is exactly that, a home movie, - with a professional touch. Our journey started with four of us setting out on a four day holiday to see a part of Queensland we had not seen. The only difference being we all agreed to travel by train rather than by car. What a wise and rewarding decision, as Bill Peach recounts in his wonderful commentary, ‘This is no ordinary journey and no ordinary Train.’
We travel through the tunnels of the Kuranda Range, an incredible engineering feat, built between 1886 and 1891, across the Atherton Tablelelands to Chilligoe, Mt. Surprise and the biggest surprise of all, Cobbold Gorge and a typical Australian bush breakfast at the Undara Lava Tubes. There are two bonus excursions ‘The Savannahlander’ doesn’t and can’t do because the rails are no longer there. We travel along the permanent way to Mount Mulligan, scene of Queensland’s worst mining disaster in 1921 – ‘the day the devil wept,’ and from Lappa Junction to Mount Garnet along one of the most rugged and spectacular railways ever constructed in Australia.
So come along and sit up front with drivers Gary and Pat and ride the rails to Savannahland, a very Queensland experience.
