The Lockheed L-1049 Constellation is a four propeller reciprocating engine airliner first flying in July of 1951. The Constellation was Lockheed's response to the successful Douglas DC-6. The aircraft was also produced for both the United States Navy as the WV/R7V and the United States Air Force as the C-121, for transport, electronics, and airborne early warning and control aircraft. A total of 856 Constellations of various models were manufactured. There are, unfortunately, only a few airworthy Constellations left today.
Lufthansa is the flag carrier of Germany, and is the second largest airline in Europe. The airline was founded on 06 January 1953. Lufthansa's headquarters are located in Cologne, Germany, with its primary hub at Frankfurt Airport. The airline has 291 aircraft in its fleet.
In 1953 the airline place an order for four Lockheed L-1049 Constellations. In April of 1955, domestic service began and in June of that year, international service began to London, Paris, Madrid and New York City.
This Lufthansa L-1049G Constellation (D-ALOP), was delivered to Lufthansa on 28 May 1955. It provided service for Lufthansa until August of 1967 when it was sold to Siegfried Karas. D-ALOP was then converted into a Cafe in the town of Neu Wulmstorf, Germany, about 30 miles from Hamburg in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It was eventually scrapped in 1975 (how very sad). This beautiful Schuco 1:72 scale heavy diecast metal reproduction of this famous aircraft is a highly detailed, and highly sought after collectors model. It is an impressive size with theapproximate dimensions being: 19.00" long with a 20.75" wingspan. The model features are:
- Completely assembled
- Razor sharp Lufthansa graphics
- Highly detailed engines
- Rotating propellers
- Highly detailed landing gear
- In flight gear doors
- Rolling rubber tires
- See thru windows
- Display stand
All sales are final. Shipping to the continental USA only.
NOTE: The last photgraph in the series is of the actual D-ALOP at Dusseldorf International Airport, Germany, in July of 1964.
NOTE: This is a new, limited production model, and is no longer available. This is an extremely difficult model to find, and will be an excellent addition to any "Connie" collector, any propliner collector or any aviation enthusiast's collection. This is the only one I have available.
