The Douglas DC-6 is a four-engine propeller driven airliner manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Military versions of this aircraft, the C-118 Liftmaster for the United States Air Force and R6D for the United States Navy, until 1962, when all Navy versions also became known as the C-118. The first flight of the DC-6 was on 15 February 1946. It was introduced in 1947 to American Airlines and United Airlines.
Pan America World Airways, commonly known as Pan Am, was an American airline that was the principle and largest international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States, for much of the 20th Century. Pan American was founded on 14 March 1927 as Pan American Airways. The airline had 49 Douglas DC-6's in service from 1953 to 1968.
This aircraft with registration N6523C, was delivered to Pan Am on 12 April 1952. It was named "Clipper Betsy Ross", who is credited with the creation of the first official United States flag, a symbol that was displayed on the aircraft's tail. It provided service with Pan Am until January of 1960 when it was sold to Capital Airlines. It went through four more owners, ending its service life with the British carrier Skyways International, in 1976 where it provided service until it was ultimately written off.
