BOEING B-29 SUPERFORTRESS
Just as the Flying Fortress devastated Germany, the Superfortress brought defeatto Japan. The B-29 was designed in 1941, and by the end of the war nearly 4,000had been built. The biggest bomber of World War II, the Superfortress weighed 60tons, including 10 tons of bombs, and was powered by four Wright Cyclone enginesof 2,300-horsepower each. The Superfortress top speed was over 350 miles perhour. Its defenses included four gun turrets operated by remote control. By 1945,Superfortresses, utilizing such hard-won island bases as Saipan and Iwo Jima,were burning out one great Japanese city after another in massive fire-raids.The atomic bombs dropped by B-29s on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in September1945 brought the Second World War to a close. During the Korean War Super-fortresses were brought out of retirement to fly highly effective precision bombingmissions against Communist targets in North Korea.
