This is a historically significant andRARE Antique 19th c. French Nautical Ship Bronze Sign Plaque, for Ateliers et Chantiers de Saint-Nazaire Penhoet, a French shipbuilding company in Sanit-Nazaire, France, which was active during the 19th and early 20th century. This company was founded in 1861 by Scottish engineer, John Scott. This company existed until 1955, when it was merged with a larger corporation. Ateliers et Chantiers de Saint-Nazaire Penhoet built military vessels during World War I, was beloved by the local populace, and the subject of several early 19th century French postcards. This sign reads: "Societe des Anonyme. Chantier et Ateliers de St. Nazaire (Penhoet.) Chantier de Penhoet." This piece likely dates to the 1880's - 1910's. Approximately 14 1/2 x 20 1/4 inches. The bronze or brass plaque was likely affixed to the front of the factory and has moderate verdigris and oxidation from decades of outdoor use and close proximity to the salty and corrosive ocean air.
