Costa Cruises - "CONCORDIA" by Jonathan Danko Kielkowski, printed 2016, hardbound w/ dust jacket, 110 pages, and "CONCORDIA Ten Years After" by same author, text in English and German, printed 2022, softbound w/ 76 pages.
"The wrecked cruise ship is visible and attracts me like a magnet, so I finally venture to swim across…" So wrote photographer Kielkowski about his August 2016 swim out to the CONCORDIA while it was being broken up in Genoa. It was his second attempt. He was apprehended by the Coast Guard the first time.
“Against all odds, I find the shipwreck freely accessible – neither fences nor security personnel. Rather, the doors are open, lights are turned on, no man can be seen“.
Kielkowski roamed the ship for seven hours, taking these remarkable photographs of luxury destroyed. There are forty-two double-page images showing ghostly cabins, ravaged public rooms, and a bridge split down the center, with destruction on one side and intact equipment on the other.
Tucked into the back is a twelve-page "Inward" by art historian Christoph Schaden in German and English. Photographer Kielkowski has signed and dated the last page.
Also included is Kielkowski's follow-up book, "CONCORDIA Ten Years After" which includes a more detailed description of his harrowing expedition to and through the ship. Forty-eight color photos are included with a mixture of images from the first book and many previously unseen views.
Only 1,000 of "CONCORDIA" were printed and Nautiques has obtained the final new copies.
