A jam session was cancelled today so I decided to hit some more great tones on camera. Sorry for the digital camera sound. For this clip, I plugged the amp's power cord into a $40 variac (a voltage regulator, inexpensive and great!) (set on 90 volts). I totally recommend doing this!! It takes harshness away and gives tonal bliss (lower-voltage amp). No effects were used.

A quick cut I played. I wanted some 50s PAFs and ended up getting "Tom Short's Vintage PAFs" - hand-wound 50's style PAF pickups with formvar wiring, beeswax potting, etc. They're priced right and the best sound I've heard for classic rock, clean, and distortion. They replaced my Tom Holmes pickups. They really cut.

Fun times. I'll have to do that again. The Sovtek amps are meant to be played loud. ****Owners of these amps really dig having a master volume installed (it's cheap and easy) -- for this tune I blended the preamp distortion with the power tube distortion using the master vol. - highly recommended.

My favorite amp. This recording is with the 1/2-power switch on (Nik can install one if requested). RECORDING: SM-57 mic up close and a Studio Projects C-1 mic, 3 feet away -- FMR Audio RNP mic pre). Reverb was added later. If you want to hear a mix of the FMR RNP (all instruments recorded through it) go to http://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=2dOvMayFV 2A

This is a small piece I grooved on with no effects. It gives a good idea of the clean tones that can come out of the amp/guitar combo. I am using EL34s with it (slight mod), but you get the idea. It was fairly loud for this recording, because that's where the Sovtek amp magic happens. The preamp was an FMR Audio RNP for every part and a RNC for compression.

I want to sound like Hendrix at Woodstock. This clip is some screwing around I did last week (loud) -- (minus a UniVibe). The fuzz is a home-made abomination with both silicone and germanium transistors (out of control). The Wah is an Ibanez WH10 - the same used by John Frusciante (great with distortion)

Whatever gets the distortion out. The fuzz is home made.
